Sacramento Taekwondo Club

Our Story

Sacramento Taekwondo Club (STC) was founded in April, 1990 by Grand Master Barbara Brand. Through the course of the last 35 years, STC’s mission has been to teach students to find the best in themselves as they study the Korean Martial art of Taekwondo. This effort has a positive impact to STC families, Sacramento community, and beyond.

STC welcomes beginners with no experience in the Martial Arts. Students have the opportunity to promote through the belt ranks from white belt to the Master level Black Belt ranks. At the same time, students have the opportunity to compete at the local, national, and international level. Our rich tradition of developing athletes is evident. 11 athletes from STC have become members of the USA Taekwondo National Poomsae Team, and 9 have competed at the highest level, the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, where STC athletes have won 5 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze.

STC is a member of USA Taekwondo, which is the national governing body for Olympic Style Taekwondo. In turn, USA Taekwondo is a member of World Taekwondo, the international governing body for Olympic Style Taekwondo.

In our children’s classes, we emphasize the value of a positive attitude, goal setting, accountability, and sportsmanship. Parents of our Taekwondo students often note their child's increased focus and heightened confidence and self-esteem. Adult students find that Taekwondo training creates balance in their lives and that feelings of accomplishment developed in a positive environment carries over into their professional and personal lives. STC develops students from white to Black Belt step by step:

White/Yellow Belt: Beginner students learn all of the basics to develop their foundational skills. They are introduced to kicks, blocks, stances, sparring, self-defense, poomsae (a sequence of techniques that simulate a defense against an opponent’s attacks), and the ancient history of Taekwondo. For children, instruction is designed to increase focus and listening skills. In class, students demonstrate their ability to apply the physical techniques of each lesson, and verbalize the key points.  For adults, instruction is designed to help increase balance, flexibility, mobility and cardiovascular strength.

Green/Blue Belt: Students are taught intermediate level spinning and jumping kicks, open hand techniques, self-defense, competition level sparring and poomsae, and the evolution of Taekwondo.  At this level, students learn about good sportsmanship and what it means to make a positive contribution when training with in-class partners and teams. They enjoy improving their speed, agility, and power as their bodies adapt to the challenges of increasingly complex techniques and begin to recognize the value of exploring and practicing outside of class and become accountable for that progress.

Red Belt: Students learn advanced level kicks, self-defense techniques, competition level sparring and poomsae, and the history of Olympic Taekwondo sparring. They undergo an assistant instruction internship, become role models and mentors to lower belt students, and fulfill a project that positively impacts lower belt students. Red belts work closely with Black Belts to reach their personal athletic potential and to become strong leaders within the club and in the community.

Black Belt: Throughout their lifetime, Black Belt students carry the pride, poise, and confidence that comes with achieving the highest belt rank. Black Belts have repeatedly reported that the critical thinking, time management, and organizational skills they gained in Taekwondo training are important assets as they pursue academic and professional success.

Black Belts learn traditional weaponry skills, advanced self-defense, instructor skills, tournament management, referee and coaching skills, and competition level sparring and poomsae. Black Belts have the opportunity to progress from 1st degree Black Belt through Master levels.

Competitive Team Training:  This program is for students who want to compete at the local, regional, national, and international level. The focus is on achieving competitive level skills through diligent technical training, strategy sessions, multi-level competition experiences, and performance analysis, evaluation, and modification.
